The Meaning of Free People of Color in Louisiana
Marie Luevo Trudeau's father may have been an important white politician. Her paternal grandfather was the surveyor general for Louisiana during its time as a Spanish colony. Both of her parents were free people of color, which in New Orleans in the early 19th century had a very specific meaning. This group emerged during the period when Louisiana was a French colony.
