Ritual cannibalism is evidence of what I'm talking about. Human sacrifice is another early, early feature that we find in human society. Go back to the Tepi over in Turkey. Is this ancient, you know, temple-like structure with very advanced animal carvings that indicates that we've been participating in the sacred at the very beginnings of our community? No religion is the placenta, as René Girard would say, religion is theplacenta of humanity. It's what birthed us and saved us from destroying ourselves.
