Stress in Mammals and Menstrual Cycles
When women are stressed, they stop reproducing. Stress in mammals in general blocks the cascade of hormones that triggers ovulation. You can switch women's menstrual cycles in and out quite literally by putting them on very heavy circuit training machines. There are lots of examples in monkeys where stress within the group suppresses in some cases, even puberty.
