i think exiled hebrew scribes were recording a real and enormously consequential historical event. We can call this event the end of mesopotamia. It may have begun as early as 12 hundred b c e when climate logical shifts caused widespread droughts, population migrations and warfare. The bronze age collapse levelled the dominant civilizations of greece and crete and cyprus. This apocalypse caused a dark age to fall over most of the civilized world.
