The Bonaparts weren't one of the richest, or most powerful families on Corsica. But they were important people looked up to as patrons by poorer families who worked their land and tended their flocks. In Carlo's youth, the family was at a low ebb; there was a cash flow problem. The war against Genoa was not good for business. It was getting harder to make ends meet. That was how Carlo ended up engaged to Latizio Ramolino.
