But they were important people looked up to as patrons by poorer families who worked their land and tended their flocks. In Carlo's youth, the family was at a low ebb; there was a cash flow problem. The war against Genoa was not good for business. It was getting harder to make ends meet. That was how Carlo ended up engaged to Latizio Ramolino.
