Listerine invented the term halitosis to sell more mouth wash. It's become a kind of just a synonym for bad breath in general, and it was tied up in this massive advertising campaign. The phrase feels a little bit alarmist, because what's happening here is that marketing companies are trying to create conditions they hope their product will treat once approved. And so this leads to a lot of distrust in the public. Bad breath is a real thing, and it can be assigned in some cases of serious medical conditions.
