If you grow up in a terribly traumatic, stressful, abusive environment, that is going to shape your brain in ways that will definitively make you more vulnerable to all kinds of psychopathology. So it's always kind of the balance between those two things working together. If you come into the world, genetically loaded for addiction, then it doesn't really take much at all, except for access to the drug for you to get addicted,. But if you come to the world super resilient to that problem, then even if you have this horrific early childhood, et cetera, and a lot of access, you might not ever become addicted.
