A gallon of gasoline produces the same amount of useful work as up to 482 hours of human labor. Energy is literally 1,000 times cheaper than it would be if we had to pay minimum wage workers to do the work now performed by gasoline-powered machinery. That's precisely the reason that societal complexity has advanced so much in the last 200 years.
