Shame is a deactivator to arousal states that's why it exists shame exists to stop us from doing things as you have to be so physiologically aroused before you can strike someone right. The questions we ask ourselves in hindsight torture us when we've had a traumatic event over and over again they torture us. trauma doesn't resolve fully until you can create a more balanced and healthy thought and perception of the event.
