The oldest old are the fastest growing population in North America. Older patients with severe injuries represent at least 40% of all adults who have suffered some sort of trauma. The shock index can still be useful in the sense that if it's elevated, that's really concerning. But there are many reasons why it may be falsely lower than you would expect to see in a younger patient.
