The James Webb space telescope is set to launch in 2035. It will look for signs of alien life on rocky planets around distant galaxies. The material from the stars must coalesce once more into new stars and planets before complex biology can begin, says Sir Paul Nurse. He asks: 'Are there other processes we do not yet know about that can lead to complex chemistry and biological evolution?'
