Jeffrey Toobin: Once a metric becomes a target, it ceases to be a useful metric. But I still find estimates tremendously useful, especially on these longer-term time scales. And so I find them really useful. He says he's not nearly as concerned about them as being lies because they're valuable to the team but aren't management fodder.
