Schostakovich could have made this into a confident even arrogant march, as if Russia had overcome this past. The music is again suppressed as if it's a memory that has by no means gone away. This is also a parody of the Soviet marching song, Bravely Comran's March to Step. As the Fjuchenko's focus switches to the present, we hear a winding view along with high woodwinds.
