In the middle ages, jews who converted to christianity were considered a betrayal. Even if he has sinned, is still an israelite - you can't not be jewish any more. Different religious communities pursue different modes of dealing with people who have crossed the boundary. You think you've left, but you haven't really left. You're still one of us. And that's a very powerful tool.
