In 1935, the Bureau of Prisons and the Public Health Service teamed up to open a first-of-its-kind center in Lexington. The hospital was not just a prison but a hospital, too; about a third of patients came voluntarily. There were cows, grazing impasters, fresh food, everything from tomatoes to kale grown by patients on site. On weekends, patients would put on big concerts in the audience.
