Aphrodisias have existed in most human cultures throughout history. In the seventeenth century theyre called provokers of venery, which is a phrase derived from venus. They're thought to be fertility aids as much as they are and things that stimulate the body. So when you see them written about in medical texts, they alviously don't want to contradict what the church is saying.
