The flood plains of mesopotamia were fertile ground for all sorts of innovative developments in the depths of the ancient past. At the root of this was something that we can understand as the state with a king at its head. Mesopotamia wasn't the only place to invent the state, it didn't emerge fully formed. And yet, mesopotamia did matter a great deal, not least because it left a long and incredibly impactful legacy far beyond the lands adjacent to the tigris and euphrates rivers. To day, we're going to focus on one of those key legacies, the state, and how it grew in capacity and importance overtime.
