The Irredentist Movement in Italy

In 1882, an Italian-irredentist named Gullielmo Obardan tried to assassinate the emperor Franz Josef by throwing a suitcase full of explosives at him. Sixteen years after that, in 1898 Franz Josef's wife Elizabeth was murdered by a young Italian anarchist who stabbed her in the heart with a file. And there had been assassination attempts before on Franz Josef and other Habsburgs, but by 1900 you could say it was really becoming a tradition to attack and assassinate Habsbergs.
