People can also adopt a wide array of strategies for coping with an uncertain world. And how they feel about an outcome can be influenced by what it was chosen over or compared to. They might get some direct satisfaction or utility from certain beliefs, rather than simply only holding beliefs purely for the pose of truth tracking and so on. When people detect biases in their own thinking, which is a judgment that ultimately depends on their own subjective wants and needs, that's how you would know what constitutes a genuine bias. We reject the idea that comprehensive consistency of preferences is a requirement of rationality.
