What's the Purpose of Culture?
In 19 30, the brilliant and famous economist, john maynard canes, was wrestling with the depression. He wrote a paper called the economic possibilities of our grand children. And he made the daring statement that in 100 years, which is about now, the standard of living would be four to eight times higher than it was then. The result of productivity increases in technology means that even before the hundred years are up, we've vastly exceeded that. So yes, it's not about the chocolate. It's about changing the culture. What is it? How do we define it? Why do swiss people eat ice as much chocolate as americans? They feel normal. We feel normal.
