The Spartan Mirage
The question of whether or not the ancient world. practiced the exposure of babies is often closely associated with disability, but it's also associated with possible economic strain on the family. The Spartan angle is not only that they threw away babies allegedly that they didn't want. It was specifically that babies were judged and then the decision was made as to whether or not they were imperfect. And this builds into a wider image of Sparta as an authoritarian regime.
