Pagan beliefs were already in decline, but the systematic banning of pagan texts and places of worship must surely have sped up the process considerably. The persecutions of heretical christians also took its toll. If it's difficult for moderns to mourn the extinction of pagan religion, then consider the consequences for free thought, reason and science. By persecuting christians, pagans initiated a vicious cycle ending with their own persecution. Tolerance is just a fancy word for suicide pact.
