The Land Equivalent Ratio

The agroforestry world uses a term called the land equivalent ratio. If you grow an acre of corn, you'll get a full acre of corn. That's one. Well, if you growing an acre of walnuts, you will get an acre of Walnuts. So in order to get the same amount of yields as you got off of that one acre combined, you'd have to have 1.3 acres separate of walnuts and corn. And it follows on most ecological research. Once upon a time, they thought that high yielding polycultures were a result of this plant helping that plant,. But now ecologist basically said it has nothing to do with compatibilities between plants
