Kant says generosity is ultimately a form of condescension on patronage. Pity and compassion appeard to come to be detestable qualities. He would rather be insulted than pitied, because pity entails a certain superiority on the part of the pitier him who is pitied. All men are equal. All men can determine themselves. And if one man pities another, he thereby reduces him, in some sense, to an animal or a thing, or at any rate, to a pitiable or pitiful object. That was cant view.
