Jim Madison: The idea of importing an artist to depict their great state offended many Hoosiers. But Benton was an established mural painter and the Indiana commissioners were sure he could paint a huge mural on their tight timeline. He had had six months or so to cover about 230 feet of paneling with the important history of Indiana. That's more than half a football field of paintings.
