The first spin out of Stanford was Paulson electronics in 1909. The area we now call Silicon Valley made vacuum tubes lead to forest to invent that the triode, you know, started in Palo Alto. After World War II, US government did something that no other country did: enlisted civilians to develop most advanced weapon systems.
