There was intense hatred and fear of germany and german americans that swept over much of the country. People gathered together and held bonfires, burning the works of beethoven and mozart in tulsa. But it also could be used opportunistically, right? So people who controlled organs like presses or churches or big businesses, could fine americanism as they wanted. They could sort of direct it to their advantage. And very importantly, understood it and inculcated it as anti union.
