The Power of Prose and the Voice of the Omniscient Narrator

There's a great divide in this novel between the power of Hurston's prose and the voice of her omniscient narrator. The dialogue is very much in a certain kind of tradition that starts with the local color writers of the 19th century. And when I read this out loud to students, of course, I don't really emphasize the misspellings.
