G.H. Hardy was a number theorist who famously wrote a defense of mathematics for its own sake in his essay, A Mathematician's Apology. I don't know if anyone has ever written a physicist's apology; is that because the answer is obvious? And there's no need to write a mathematical physicist's apology.
