John's father, Lieutenant General Leonard Perutz, was a high-ranking intelligence officer for the U.S. Air Force stationed in Germany. A memo from the NSA landed on his desk about some concerning Soviet military movements. He had no clue that the Soviets had intercepted able-archer radio communications and were ready to launch nuclear weapons at NATO targets. If he waited while the Soviets launched nuclear bombs from their planes, the world would be forever changed - possibly destroyed.
