When King Edward III dies, the throne goes to his grandchild Richard II. When there's a child in charge, other people tend to want to move into that power vacuum. The War of the Roses becomes so-called by future generations because the two families involved had roses for their family symbols. Both families were descended from cadet branches of King Edward III.
