In their view, there was no separate sphere or separate set of rules for gods or spirits. All this was part of nature in ancient people's view. So you could refer to a man as a religious and that meant a monk. Woman who was called a religious was a nun. If you talk in french about ruligeuse, you're talking about a nun. This is how the word is used, basically up until the protestant reformation.
