I wonder if in America, the idea of commitment is especially hard because even before the internet, the stories we've been telling ourselves. The Oregon Trail uprooting your life and heading out to the metaphorical or literal West can be our greatest strength. But it does seem antithetical to the idea that you're espousing, which is that sometimes the most radical act we can take is to tell a story of continuity rather than an individualist one.
