The Crusaders of the Orient

The 4th crusade was the most disgraceful campaign conducted by a crusading army in the east. The goal of the fourth crusade was much like those that had come before it, to recapture the city of jerusalem. For the next 200 years, there would be some form of crusader presence in the eastern mediterranean. They set up small city states and crusader kingdoms,. A kind of early prototype of the settler states that would later characterize european colonialism. And for a period of about two centuries, the emperor alexios presided over a sustained restoration of the military, economic and political position of the byzantine empire.
