There was an existing script with a guidance counselor and the writers realized that Danny was better. And they crammed this entire storyline into this episode. It's just a time consuming storyline that doesn't involve any of the regular cast. They wanted to satisfy the Griff Harley stuff, but it brings Danny back. But it just makes for an awkward episode because it's shined in and it takes up all the oxygen.
