Heavy water is necessary for creating a working atomic bomb. In 1940, there was only one plant in the world that made it. The Nazis very suspiciously ordered several hundred pounds with a request for a further 220 pounds per month after that. allied forces spent 36 million francs to buy out every bit of heavy water from Nazi hands.
