Proust wrote for 13 years and also he couldn't get a publisher. He had to self-publish it at his own expense, I think he inherited quite a lot of money. There was one person who believed in him and championed the work under an assumed name. Proust paid for his own early reviews in lots of newspapers. And he described his own work as a little masterpiece.
