I think covid and lockdowns were rough for people. As we spend more time on line, we forget how to have basic small talk with people. It's not like i like small talk, but it does help to warm up and build raport at my parties. I do things like the name tags, like the ice breakers, to help add a little bit of rules to an otherwise unstructured event. If you don't want to talk about work, then you can mention a charity that you support or a hobby that you're superpassiont about.
