The Story of Augustine's Life
Augustine's conversion comes in a garden where Augustine has been weeping over his inability to defeat his own desires. He suddenly hears a child's voice from nearby, chanting in Latin, Tole, Lege, take, read. At this climactic point, we are still only in the eighth of the confession's thirteen books. The autobiographical portion continues on through Book Nine with the story of Augustine's baptism and the death of Monica following a mystical vision shared by mother and son.
