The Rise and Fall of the Index Fund

The first index fund was born at Wells Fargo in 71. The data on active underperformance was pretty clear in the 60s, although this is obviously the pre-internet era where information just traveled very slowly. And for a lot of big pension funds, especially the ones that first seeded the initial index funds, they kind of owned the entire market already. It's only really, you know, in the 80s and really 90s things started taking off.
