We Can't Decide When Our Country Started
There are growing number of Americans who don't really even believe in the American idea. Some of that has to do with how people conceptualize the early period of our country and how they make sense of it more than two centuries later. They take modern standards of what is right and good and superimpose them. I think that creates a lot of contention about the American idea in a way that I don't remember.
