The Effects of Protein on the Urea Cycle

There are a number of enzymes involved in the urea cycle, which you can see in this graphic. The thing that's very interesting about humans is that many of these enzymes,. specifically arginase and arginosexinase, can only be upregulated to a small extent as we increase our protein consumption. In obligate carnivores, things like lions, cats, felids, they can actually upregulate those enzymes infinitely. Our biochemistry is different. We have a ceiling to which we can upregulating those enzymes. So there is both a ceiling to the amount of protein that any human can consume physiologically.
