The History of Primaries

Until 1972, presidential candidates were nominated in a hybrid system. Primaries were used to test the viability of a candidate. Whoever wins the primaries gets the delegates and the delegates go to a convention. Both parties now have binding primaries. That means there's no place where people who know something about government look at presidential candidates and say this person could be a president, this person could not be.
