Ulysses is the type of book that you probably need a companion to get through. For modernist stuff, if we're including the post modernists in the modernist umbrella, then maybe call cormac mc carthy, blood meridian or the road would be good. I'd say hemmingway is kind of like the daddy or the papa, the father of modernism. Prust is very long, winding sentences that stretch on for pages and pages - Hemmingway is just short, strip oemotion. Short stories are easy to digest, or easier than big fat pieces of fiction. There's really a glimpse of something called truth, which i can think of
