The Golden Ass and the Metamorphoses
The film is based on Robert Bresson's 1966 Baltezar, which conveys that idea of the picker-esque adventures of a donkey. The woman and the donkey are all anxieties about women and donkeys or donkeys and horses. That's all there in the ancient thought world. And when you watch it, it's a very different vibe to EO. It's a much more austere world.
