The Importance of Purpose in Magic
The altar is the workspace and home base for your magic. It has a lot to do with how well aligned your object is with your purpose, like you mentioned. I personally watch too much good eats growing up to want to own a bunch of stuff with only a single purpose. This said, I also don't have a desk or a TV in my bedroom because that's not what that room is for.
