Introduction
Epicurus is one of the first philosophers of what tends to be called the Hellenistic period. He was born on the island of Samos to Athenian parents, and set up a philosophical school in Athens. His two main claims were an ethical claim which said that the good life is the life of the greatest pleasure. But he had a very unusual idea of what the greatest pleasure involves.
