Allison Clemente is the author of Dress Casual, how college students redefined American style. The turn of the last century really saw the introduction and rise of sports as part of American culture. A lot of preppy clothes started as sportswear; button-down shirts were versions of polo players used to wear. Princeton has a huge part of its culture that is run almost entirely by students.
