20,000 angry men and women surrounded the convention with artillery in place. The mob was then stiffly reinforced by companies of national guard drawn from the eastern sections. A termidorian deputy tried to stand in their way, but for his trouble, he was shot dead where he stood. So when they finally all came bursting into the hall, a severed head was the first thing the delegates inside saw.
