There are slightly different processes. When you're trying to clean up bad recordings, a lot of what needs to be done is removing hiss and crackle. The reality though is that technologys come a long way at recovering bad audio. But every mix engineer is going to tell you, don't fix it in the mix. Get it good the first time.
